Plot: A serial killer is on the loose in Paris. Victims are all young women and found brutally mutilated. Also, at each murder site, a bracelet is found that has three bell charms dangling from it. The police become suspicious of psychology Professor Paul Dupin because a cameo brooch traced to him was found with one victim. He was also apprehended on the rooftops of the Rue Morgue after a third killing incident. He insists he was chasing the murderer, not guilty of the crime himself. Dupin's fiancee Jeanette is approached by Dr. Marais, director of a zoo and an animal behavior specialist. Marais had met her when he delivered a guest lecture in Dupin's class on conditioning techniques. He showed how mice would leave a tempting chunk of cheese untouched until the proper signal has been given. Marais is a widower and finds Jeanette quite attractive. Knowing that Dupin is locked up in jail, he quickly takes the opportunity to invite her to the zoo. Once there, he provides a private tour that includes his dead wife's room, something he has preserved exactly as she left it. He then takes her to meet a gorilla with whom he has been working, coaching her on how to approach it such that it will not feel threatened and attempt to retaliate. He is pleased when she succeeds. Back in the wife's room and initiates some romantic overtures. She is horrified at his advances and rebuffs him. He tries to smooth her ruffled feathers by gifting her a bracelet with three bells.
